Deadly Flooding in Texas and the Camp Mystic Tragedy
In early July 2025, relentless rainstorms swept across Texas, triggering catastrophic flooding that has claimed lives, destroyed property, and shaken entire communities. Among the most heartbreaking consequences of the flooding was a tragedy at Camp Mystic, a beloved summer retreat near Hunt, Texas, where many lost their lives or went missing when floodwaters overwhelmed the area.
The Scope of the Texas Flooding
Over the Fourth of July weekend, unprecedented amounts of rainfall were partially fueled by the remnants of Tropical Storm Barry. Some areas received over 20 inches of rain within a short period, leading to flash floods that overwhelmed the region’s infrastructure.
The Guadalupe River, in particular, rose rapidly, reaching record levels and causing widespread destruction. Kerr County bore the brunt of the disaster, reporting at least 96 fatalities, including 36 children. The floods destroyed homes, washed away roads, and left many communities isolated.
Emergency services conducted hundreds of rescues as waters rose, but the speed and intensity of the flooding caught many off guard. The overall death toll across Texas reached at least 120, with over 160 individuals still reported missing, many of whom are from Kerr County.
The Camp Mystic Tragedy
Camp Mystic, a private Christian summer camp for girls located on the banks of the Guadalupe River, quickly became a center point in the disaster. In the early hours of July 4th, the river rose rapidly, about 26 feet in 45 minutes, catching staff and campers off guard.
Around 550 girls, many between the ages of 8 and 17, were asleep in their cabins when the water began rising. As the river overflowed, floodwaters quickly reached the tops of the cabins, sweeping through the campgrounds with overwhelming force.
Amid the chaos, camp counselors and staff attempted to evacuate the children, guiding them to higher ground in darkness and pouring rain. Despite these heroic efforts, at least 27 campers and counselors, along with Camp Mystic’s owner and director, died in the flooding, with many more still missing and unaccounted for.
Disaster Response and Recovery Efforts
In the wake of the flooding, a massive search and rescue operation was launched, involving over 2,100 personnel, including firefighters from Mexico. FEMA established a task force in Center Point, Texas, to coordinate relief efforts.
Community support following the devastating floods has been overwhelming. The San Antonio Zoo lit its parking garage green to honor the victims, inspired by social media campaigns encouraging the display of green ribbons representing Camp Mystic’s spirit. This tribute has spread across Texas, with communities like Highland Park in Dallas and Memorial City in Houston participating.
In memory of 9-year-old Lila Bonner, her family launched “Lila’s Light,” an animal care foundation aimed at helping animals affected by natural disasters. The initiative has received widespread support, raising over $400,000 as of July 10.
Recognizing and Remembering Victims of the Texas Flooding Tragedy
