Car Accident Reports in Texas

Car Accident Reports in Texas

If you’ve been in a Texas car accident, you may need a copy of the accident report. The report, known as a CR-3, provides important details about your accident that will help with your insurance or personal injury claim. This information is necessary for ensuring you get the compensation you deserve after an accident.

How To Get a Copy of a Texas Car Accident Report Online

You can access car crash reports through the Texas Department of Transportation’s Crash Records Information System (C.R.I.S). To access a copy of your accident report:

  • Visit the C.R.I.S Website
  • Search for your accident report by providing:
    • The name of a person involved in the accident;
    • The driver’s license number of a person involved in the accident;
    • The VIN of a car involved in the accident; or
    • The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) crash ID number.
  • Once you’ve located the report, you’ll pay for the report. There is a $6 fee that you can pay online.
  • Download a copy of the report. Even if you don’t download a copy, you can continue to access it online once you’ve purchased it.

Your lawyer can also obtain a copy of your report for you.

How To Get a Texas Crash Report By Mail

You can also access a copy of your report by mail if you’d prefer to get it this way. Here’s how to do that:

  • Get a copy of Form CR-91. You can download a copy of this form from the TxDOT website or get a hard copy from a law enforcement officer.
  • Fill out two copies of the form. It asks for specific information about the accident, including:
    • The accident date
    • The accident location
    • Information about the driver or passengers involved
  • Provide an address where the accident report should be sent. The report can be sent to your home, insurance company, or your attorney.
  • Include payment for the report. A basic copy costs $6, and a certified copy is $8.Checks should be made payable to the Texas Department of Transportation.
  • Mail your request to Crash Records, Texas Department of Transportation, P.O. Box 12879, Austin, TX 78711

This will generally be a slower option than obtaining a copy online.

How Long Does It Take to Get a Texas Accident Report?

Accident reports are not always available immediately after your crash. Your report will be available as soon as the Law Enforcement Officer, often referred to as a Peace Officer in Texas, has completed the accident report. It can take up to 10 days from the date of the accident until it’s finalized and submitted by the Peace Officer.

Once the report has been submitted, you can access it online at the C.R.I.S website. If you’re requesting the report by mail, it can take up to twenty days.
