Five of the Deadliest Train Accidents in History

Five of the Deadliest Train Accidents in History

Trains are generally considered one of the safer ways to travel. Compared with the prevalence of car and truck accidents across the country, the statistics likely support that presumption. However, when something does go wrong on a train, the consequences can be especially devastating for victims. Over the years, certain railway disasters have claimed hundreds of lives in a single incident.

Most modern train travel is far safer than it used to be, thanks to improved safety regulations, but the history of rail is marked by some truly terrible accidents. Here’s a look at five of the deadliest train accidents ever recorded.

Sri Lanka Tsunami Train Disaster (2004)

The deadliest rail accident in history wasn’t caused by human error or a mechanical failure. On December 26, 2004, a passenger train was traveling along Sri Lanka’s coast when it was struck by the massive Indian Ocean tsunami. The train was packed with holiday travelers, and the waves completely destroyed the eight train cars.

Exact casualty numbers have never been confirmed, but it’s estimated that around 1,700 people died in the accident. This makes it the deadliest rail disaster the world has ever seen.

Ciurea Rail Disaster, Romania (1917)

Known in Romania as the Ciurea catastrophe, this accident happened on January 13, 1917, during the height of World War I. A runaway train carrying soldiers and refugees derailed and caught fire after being switched to a side track near the Ciurea station.

Because the war made accurate record-keeping difficult, the exact death toll is unknown. Estimates range from 800 to 1,000 fatalities, making it one of the worst rail accidents of all time by any measure.

Bihar Train Disaster, India (1981)

On June 6, 1981, a passenger train derailed and plunged into the Bagmati River near Saharsa, in the northeastern Indian state of Bihar. The train was reportedly overcrowded, carrying an estimated 1,000 people.

Reports vary on what caused the derailment. Some accounts blame heavy monsoon flooding, while others point to the train’s engineer braking suddenly to avoid hitting a cow. Around 600 people are believed to have died, though the remote location and flooding conditions made the recovery efforts extremely difficult.

Saint-Michel-de-Maurienne Derailment, France (1917)

The deadliest train accident in French history occurred on December 12, 1917. A military train carrying around 1,000 French soldiers returning home from the Italian front derailed on a steep descent in the French Alps.

The train’s brakes were considered inadequate for the heavy load, and the conductor had actually raised concerns before the trip. Those concerns went unheeded; somewhere between 400 and 700 soldiers died in the resulting crash and fire.

Guadalajara Train Disaster, Mexico (1915)

On January 22, 1915, during the Mexican Revolution, a 20-car military train left Colima bound for Guadalajara. It was carrying the families of Venustiano Carranza’s troops and was severely overcrowded at the time.

The train lost control while descending a steep slope and plunged into a ravine. Over 600 people are believed to have died, making it the deadliest train accident in North American history.
