Houston-Area Chemical Plant Fire: What You Need to Know

This morning at around 8:00 a.m., a large explosion and fire were reported at Sound Resource Solutions, a chemical plant near Houston. All chemical plant employees have been accounted for — one employee suffered minor burns. There were nearly twenty employees in the building at the time of the explosion and fire.

The Response from Authorities

Local authorities in Shepherd, the site of the blast, are evacuating homes and buildings in the area, which included a private school with over two dozen children. Residents of nearby cities have also been asked to shelter in place due to concerns that the smoke is being carried north by strong winds. Many roads and highways near the plant have been closed, including U.S. Highway 59.

Dark black smoke could be seen from the plant after the explosion. Officials said that flammable liquids, turpentine, and diesel fuel were possibly burning in the fire. The story is still developing. Officials are conducting a preliminary investigation to determine the cause of the fire. The damage to the chemical plant and the resulting environmental and health consequences for the surrounding areas are not yet known.

As previously mentioned, the cause of the chemical plant fire has yet to be determined. Likewise, it will take time to understand the health consequences for individuals exposed to the chemicals at the plant or nearby areas.

If officials determine that the chemical plant fire was the result of negligence or inadequate safety protocols on the part of Sound Resource Solutions, affected individuals may have a personal injury claim against the plant/its owners. A personal injury claim will enable affected individuals to pursue damages against the company for burn injuries and other conditions or illnesses caused by exposure to burning chemicals from the plant.

Affected plant employees will likely be entitled to workers’ compensation benefits to cover their medical expenses and lost wages due to injuries related to the fire. Depending on the circumstances, Injured employees may also be eligible to file a third-party personal injury claim to recover additional damages.
