The 10 Most Dangerous Trucking Companies In The U.S.
Accidents caused by commercial trucks can be devastating, and some companies come up in discussions regarding such serious truck accidents more than others.
Below are ten such companies that have been involved in more frequent roadway collisions based on the number of active vehicles in their fleets throughout the last 24 months (March 2023 to March 2025):
1. Federal Express Corporation (FedEx)
FedEx operated a total of 137,482 vehicles.
Some of these vehicles were involved in the following crashes, as detailed by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA):
- 1,486 total crashes (Ratio to total vehicles: 0.01)
- 31 fatal crashes (Ratio: 0.0002)
- 508 injury crashes (Ratio: 0.0037)
It’s important to note, however, that the above data does not distinguish between accidents where the trucker was at fault and accidents caused by someone else.
2. United Parcel Service (UPS)
UPS operated a total of 117,153 vehicles and was involved in the following:
- 2,462 total crashes (0.021)
- 72 fatal crashes (0.00061)
- 826 injury crashes (0.0071)
Although UPS leads the way in total crashes, you can see that its ratio of crashes to total vehicles is relatively low.
3. J.B. Hunt Transport
J.B. Hunt operated 25,280 vehicles, and its crash numbers are as follows:
- 1,637 total crashes (0.065)
- 54 fatal crashes (0.0021)
- 521 injury crashes (0.021)
Although it has far fewer vehicles than the latter two carriers, J.B. Hunt has been involved in more accidents than even FedEx.
4. Swift Transportation Co. Of Arizona LLC (Swift)
Swift had 13,880 active vehicles over the past 24 months.
Of these, its accident rates include:
- 892 crashes (0.064)
- 35 fatal crashes (0.0026)
- 263 injury crashes (0.019)
Despite the “Of Arizona” in the name, Swift is a nationwide company, and as you can see, it’s one of the most crash-prone.
5. Werner Enterprises
Werner Enterprises’ 9,863 active vehicles were involved in the following crashes:
- 813 total crashes (0.082)
- 21 fatal crashes (0.0021)
- 234 injury crashes (0.024)
Though Werner is a relatively small carrier, it still manages to have the second-highest ratio of crashes to vehicles on our list.
6. Averitt Express
Averitt Express had 5,425 active vehicles, which were involved in:
- 328 total crashes (0.060)
- 9 fatal crashes (0.0017)
- 97 injury crashes (0.018)
Averitt is a small trucking company, but its relatively high proportion of accidents means that it routinely shows up on “dangerous trucking company” lists such as this one.
7. U.S. XPRESS
U.S. XPRESS’s 5,738 active trucks were involved in the following:
- 515 total crashes (0.09)
- 14 fatal crashes (0.0024)
- 160 injury crashes (0.028)
U.S. XPRESS may not be a well-known carrier, but it has the dubious distinction of the greatest crashes-to-vehicle ratio.
8. XPO Logistics Freight
XPO Logistics Freight had 9,955 active trucks that ended up in the following:
- 689 total crashes (0.069)
- 21 fatal crashes (0.0021)
- 208 injury crashes (0.021)
Despite XPO’s small size, it has still been involved in a proportionally high number of crashes.
9. Schneider National Carriers
Schneider maintained 9,959 active trucks that ended up in the following crashes:
- 718 total crashes (0.072)
- 11 fatal crashes (0.0011)
- 240 injury crashes (0.024)
Schneider doesn’t have the largest number of crashes on the list, but the number of crashes it’s involved in is (like XPO) proportionally high.
10. Old Dominion Freight Line
Lastly, Old Dominion oversaw 10,974 trucks that were involved in the following:
- 639 total crashes (0.058)
- 24 fatal crashes (0.0022)
- 187 injury crashes (0.017)
Old Dominion has many crashes, although it’s generally safer than many similarly-sized companies.
Keeping Yourself Safe On the Road
Even the safest driver can still be badly injured by a careless trucker. If you do suffer an injury in a truck accident, an attorney can explain your legal options and help you determine your next steps.
